UX Lab kicks up some serious action!
3rd August 2009

Things have been busy back at the UX Labs

Indigo Consulting flagged off a multi country user research for one of the world's leading mobile phone companies. The project applied cutting edge research techniques, going beyond traditional usability data on ease of use, to focus on user experience. Participants interacted with working prototypes to reveal user response and feedback on interaction and visual design, as well as need and gaps that may present opportunities. The research insights are to play a defining role in the design of features and interaction on next generation mobile phones.

Just before that, UX Labs at Indigo Consulting applied the user centered design process for the design of the new site for one of our banking clients. The project team recently concluded usability research to validate the new design with users and evaluate if the design met the stated business and usability goals. The research team used both live and remote testing techniques to validate the design with users across various cities in the country. The use of remote testing techniques allowed the research team to talk to various kinds of potential and existing customers across various cities while optimizing on time and expense. In the UT sessions, users were asked to perform various tasks on the existing and new design as well as provide subjective feedback in order to assess the change in user experience and reveal opportunities for further design improvement.

The research lead to concrete solutions to improve navigation, information architecture, labels and visual design. The research data also provided orienting information on how target users make decisions, what information they look for and what they expect from bank websites. Another important output of the research was usability metrics on task success, user satisfaction, perceived difficulty and ease of use which allow measurement of usability and tracking of improvement between the two designs.

The application of UX techniques and guidelines on this project lead to enhanced usability of the site and demonstrated an increment of 24% in overall site rating and an increase in task success rates from 62.5%on the old design to 90% in the new design. On the other hand, knowing and fixing issues that users faced, before coding and release, has helped us save on re-development and iteration costs for the client and ensure delivery of a better, more impactful and user friendly design.

And things have only just begun!
